The VSB needs pro bono lawyers to assist with issues arising from Hurricane Matthew in the Hampton Roads area where a disaster declaration has been issued following the devastating flooding accompanying the hurricane. In conjunction with the ABA and Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia, the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference is offering free legal assistance to those residents affected by the flooding in the independent cities of Chesapeake, Newport News, Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
Victims of the flooding will use a toll free number to be referred to a volunteer lawyer. The lawyer will then be sent information on the referral but it is the responsibility of the disaster victim to contact the lawyer by phone. You do not need to be in the Tidewater region to participate since all contact will be by phone.
Examples of legal assistance available include:
· Assistance with securing FEMA and other benefits available to disaster survivors
· Assistance with life, medical and property insurance claims
· Help with home repair contracts and contractors
· Counseling on landlord/tenant and mortgage-foreclosure problems
· Replacement of wills and other important legal documents destroyed in the disaster
· Assisting in consumer protection matters, remedies, and procedures
The YLC is setting up a training CLE slated for early December. In the meantime, please consider volunteering prior to the training as the results of the flooding continues to affect those Tidewater residents.
To assist, please complete and return the volunteer registration form here: http://m.vsb.org/docs/conferences/young-lawyers/elsvolunteer2016.pdf
