The Supreme Court of Virginia has approved Legal Ethics Opinions 1329, 1438, 1584, 1606, 1742, 1792, 1856, and 1869.

The Supreme Court of Virginia approved the following changes to the Rules of the Court, effective January 1, 2017:

Amendments to Rules 1.6: Confidentiality of Information and 3.3: Candor Toward the Tribunal are effective December 1, 2016.

At its meeting on October 7, 2016, in Roanoke, the Virginia State Bar Council approved and sent to the Supreme Court of Virginia for its consideration:

The Virginia State Bar’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics has sent to the Council for its consideration proposed amendments to Rules 7.1 - 7.5 of the Rules of Professional Conduct that govern lawyer advertising.

The Virginia State Bar Clients' Protection Fund Board seeks comments on proposed amendments to the Clients' Protection Fund Rules. The amendments will be presented to Council February 25, 2017.

The MCLE reporting deadline is 4:45 p.m. December 15.

The website is part of an ABA multi-state initiative to provide online pro bono civil legal assistance to Virginia residents with income levels of 250 percent of the poverty guidelines or less (a household income of just over $29,000 annually for a single adult).

The VSB needs pro bono lawyers to assist with issues arising from Hurricane Matthew in the Hampton Roads area where a disaster declaration has been issued following the devastating flooding accompanying the hurricane.

Experienced judges and lawyers will provide practice tips at the First Day in Practice seminar. The December 6 seminar is sponsored by the VSB General Practice Section and the Young Lawyers Conference. Six CLE credits, two ethics (pending). Space is limited.

The Standing Committee on Lawyer Discipline calls for nominations for district committee vacancies to be filled by Council in June.

The VSB is seeking nominations for the following awards:

President-elect Causey seeks members for Virginia State Bar committees with terms commencing July 1, 2017.

Volunteers are needed to serve the Virginia State Bar’s boards and committees. The Nominating Committee will refer nominees to the VSB Council for consideration at its June meeting.

The annual Law in Society essay contest for high school students is accepting entries.

Register now for the March 10, 2017 Bar Leaders Institute in Richmond or the April 7, 2017 Solo & Small-Firm Practitioner Forum in Lynchburg.

Online registration for the April 24, 2017 VSB TECHSHOW will open on Monday, December 12, 2016.
