The Standing Committee on Legal Ethics is seeking public comment on proposed advisory Legal Ethics Opinion 1886Duty of partners and supervisory lawyers in a law firm when another lawyer in the firm suffers from significant impairment. The comment deadline is September 9.

The Advisory Committee on Rules of Court of the Judicial Council of Virginia invites comment on a possible revision to Evidence Rule 2:607: Impeachment of Witnesses. The comment deadline is September 15.

Registration is now open for the 28th Annual Intellectual Property Seminar on October 21-22 at the Williamsburg Lodge.  The seminar is entitled:  The Evolving Landscape of IP.

The Young Lawyers Conference 16th annual Professional Development Conference will be September 30 and October 7 at six locations – Washington, DC; Richmond; Virginia Beach; Tysons Corner; Roanoke; and Wise.

Registration is open for the Special Committee on Access to Legal Services annual Pro Bono Conference and Celebration on Wednesday, October 26, at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Hampton Hotel Convention Center & Spa.

Membership dues must be received by October 11 to avoid suspension. Members may pay at the member’s portal or by mail.

Virginia.freelegalanswers.org is up and running. The site is part of an ABA multi-state initiative to provide online pro bono civil legal assistance to Virginia residents with income levels of 250 percent of the poverty guidelines or less (a household income of just over $29,000 annually for a single adult).

Please register for two upcoming Virginia Lawyer Referral Service webinars. Part 1: Introduction, Mission and Ethical Considerations will be September 14 at 1 p.m. and Part 2: Criminal Law, Wills, Estates and Trusts will be September 28 at 1 p.m.

Registration is open for two free pro bono webinars that will provide an overview of the laws surrounding Social Security Disability and Landlord Tenant disputes as they pertain to seriously ill, underserved Virginians.

Ballots for the open 17th Circuit seat on the VSB Council were e-mailed to eligible voters on August 29. The election will close on September 9. The vacancy is for an unexpired term beginning immediately, and ending June 30, 2018. Read statements from candidates David A. Oblon and Nathan J. Olson.

Volunteers are needed to serve on the Virginia State Bar’s boards and committees. The Nominating Committee will refer nominees to the VSB Council for consideration at its October meeting. 

The Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board will hear Catherine Ann Lee’s reinstatement petition on September 23.

Now is the time to check your online record and plan your MCLE compliance. Apply now for any non-approved course that you have attended. The MCLE compliance deadline is October 31.

Save the date for the 47th Annual Criminal Law Seminar, sponsored by the VSB Criminal Law Section and Virginia CLE, February 3 in Williamsburg and February 10 in Charlottesville.
