Regulation

The Supreme Court of Virginia is seeking comments on proposed changes to the rules of criminal discovery submitted to the Court by the VSB Criminal Discovery Reform Task Force. Comments are due by June 1, 2018.

Effective December 1, the Court requests lawyers voluntarily report pro bono hours and/or financial contributions. Full text of order here.

The Court also seeks lawyers for Medical Malpractice Review Panels (MMRPs). If you are interested, please send a short bio or resume to nominations@vsb.org. Application deadline: May 31.    

Effective April 1, the Court has posted amendments to the Rules of Court relating to Parts 1 and 3A, Forms and Rule 4:12. Changes may be found here.

On February 8, the Committee on Lawyer Discipline approved proposed amendments to Part 6, Section IV, Paragraph 13-1 and 13-9 of the Rules of Court that allow the Disciplinary Board to assess fees and costs of a Guardian Ad Litem. Comments are due by March 30. Full revisions may be read here.

On February 24, the VSB Council approved proposed LEO 1750 and proposed amendments conforming Paragraph 13 references to Chapter 27.2 of title 55 of the Code of Virginia renaming CRESPA (Consumer Real Estate Protection Act) to RESA (Real Estate Settlement Agents), as well as proposed amendments to Paragraph 13-1 clarifying “Disciplinary Record” and adding a definition for burden of proof. All of these proposals will be submitted to the Supreme Court of Virginia for approval.

Governance   

If you are interested in serving on Council, the VSB's governing body, the following circuits will have elections. To be eligible, you must be a member in good standing of the circuit as of March 15. You must file a nominating petition with the executive director at elections@vsb.org on or before March 30.

Volunteers are needed to serve on VSB committees beginning July 1, 2018. Nominations, along with a brief résumé, should be sent by March 9.

Events and Awards

Registration is open for the April 23 VSB TECHSHOW. Topics include the legal issues of the Dark Web, BitCoin, the Cloud, and the ethics of E-Discovery .

Registration is still open for the March 9 Bar Leaders Institute at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.

Registration is open for the Bench-Bar Dinner honoring women and minorities.

Applications for the Oliver Hill/Samuel Tucker Pre-Law Institute, a joint initiative of the VSB's Diversity Conference and Young Lawyers Conference, are due April 1. Help spread the word in this effort to promote diversity in law.

Space is still available in Wytheville for the webcast of the May 3 Leroy Rountree Hassell Sr. Indigent Criminal Defense Seminar.
